LEWIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONVICTED
Your victory for gossip over justice is not a cause for celebration. The
fundamental injustice in the case of the wealthy drug-smuggler is not that
his name was suppressed, but that he was discharged without conviction.
It is a great pity that the Herald did not invest as much effort in
campaigning for the Crown to appeal the man's discharge as it did in
pursuing a prurient interest in publishing his name. We will not be a better
society when the media's right to determine guilt or innocence supersedes
that of the courts.
