TROY STILL HAS A CHAMPION

MY STATEMENT of August 23, "aiming for a reduced road toll is like aiming
to minimise harm from drugs", stands. Keith Price's comment (Letters,
August 26), "The analogy works only if you think there is a legitimate use
for the drugs in question, which he clearly does not," is nonsense. I could
have said "aiming for a reduced road toll is like aiming to minimise harm
from tobacco smoking". Must I accept a legitimate (positive) use for
tobacco smoking for the analogy to be in order? Now please don't tell me
there is a legitimate (positive) use because tobacco is legal! We should,
and we do, aim for zero smoking deaths. It should be the same for illicit
drugs. I acknowledge that most attacks on my views occur because I've had
the temerity to attack the "Trojan Horse" of harm minimisation which, as
our 15-year-old national drug strategy, has produced today's drug disaster
but I'll still do my best to save Troy.
