ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS "SHOW GOOD CHARACTER" DURING RED RIBBON
WEEK

The week of October 23-27, 2006, Mid-Prairie Elementary Schools will
be celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is a week set aside
each year in October to focus on drug prevention activities. The
theme this year is "Show Good Character by Being Drug Free" for the
elementary students.

Mid-Prairie Elementary Schools will be participating in the following
activities during Red Ribbon Week:

Monday, October 23 - "Show Good Character by Being Drug Free" slogan
of the day and theme of the week. Each student will receive a red
ribbon with the slogan on it. They may wear them all week.

Tuesday, October 24 - "Be Sharp - Don't Do Drugs" slogan for the day.
Each student will receive a pencil with a drug-free message on it.

Wednesday, October 25 - "My Future is Bright" slogan for the day. Wear red day.

Thursday, October 26 - "Don't be a Sucker - Show Good Character"
slogan for the day. Each student will receive a "Good Character" sucker.

Friday, October 27 - "Character Counts" slogan for the day. Teachers
will encourage students to display the six pillars of Character
Counts-Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring,
and Citizenship.

In addition, Wellman Elementary School will kick off the week by
holding Friendship Groups on Monday, October 23. The mixed aged
groups will be getting together in the afternoon to sign "Good
Character" pledges. At an assembly at the end of the day they will
share their pledges and sing songs.

The students have been preparing for Red Ribbon Week all month
through their Guidance classes taught by Nora Kehoe, Valli Kempf and
Amy Shalla. In Guidance, the students have been learning to be "Too
Good For Drugs". This program is by the Mendez Foundation and is a
research-based drug prevention program supported by At-Risk funds.
At-Risk funds also recently paid for the Fax Gilbert assemblies on
"Character and Bullying" that were held at the elementary schools and
Middle School the beginning of October.
