COLORFUL FIGHT AGAINST DRUGS AT SHS

Leigh Petty and Kala Kirby are preparing for a fun-filled time and
making a big colorful splash as part of Red Ribbon Week October 21-29
at Scottsboro High School.

Both are guidance counselors. Petty works with freshmen and
sophomores while Kirby works with juniors and seniors.

This is the third year for participation at the school in the special
week, which is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the
nation, according to Kirby and Petty. Health teacher Harvey Page
observed the campaign in his classroom for years before the event was
taken school wide.

Although they are only in charge of activities at Scottsboro High,
several other schools are conducting their own campaigns for Red
Ribbon Week. The start and ending dates, as well as activities, can
vary slightly depending on the organization.

Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals
to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of children through a
commitment to drug-free lives with the ultimate goal being the
creation of a drug free America.

Many classroom doors and other places at the school are being
decorated with drug free awareness messages in connection with the
observance. Kirby and Petty are asking residents and businesses in
Scottsboro to join in the program by displaying red ribbons during the week.

Various activities and themes for each day next week are as follows,
said Petty:

Monday -- You might be a Redneck if you don't wear red to kickoff Red
Ribbon Week.

Tuesday -- Overall, we say no to drugs: wear overalls.

Wednesday -- Join the fight against drugs; wear camouflage.

Thursday -- Use your head! Don't do drugs; wear crazy hair or a wig.

Friday -- Don't let drugs scare you. Wear Halloween costumes.
