ONLY A FOOL BREAKS OLYMPIC RULE

Province readers commenting about Eric Lamaze on the neighbouring page were
unanimous: the Canadian Olympic Association was right to reject the
equestrian's bid to ride for his country Sunday.

We agree. The Olympic rules must be heeded by all who aspire to compete or
they are nothing more than blanks. The evidence speaks volumes; Lamaze broke
his agreement with the COA the minute he toked on that cocaine-soaked
cigarette. One incident, or 100, the fact is the drug was traceable through
tests. And don't be fooled by Lamaze's mea culpas -- the top-notch rider has
continuously mislead Canadians and Olympic officials about his drug use. His
penchant for thumbing his nose at the rules -- until he's caught -- makes a
mockery of Canadian athletes who step into the arena clean.
