CRIME DOESN'T PAY, BUT IT CAN BE LUCRATIVE

Perhaps crime pays after all - at least for the good guys. In a classic case of irony, the crime of drug-trafficking is going to reap huge dividends for Hall County and Parmer County.

The Hall County Sheriff's Department and the Department of Public Safety, as a result of a March drug bust, will split $36,000 in cash. HCSD will also receive a 1995 Chevrolet Suburban seized in the arrest, which included 1,500 pounds of marijuana.

Not to be outdone, Parmer County could be the beneficiary of a massive seizure Sept. 17 that hauled in $2.5 million in cash found in the back of a tractor trailer outside Bovina. The county and the state could divide the loot pending a waiting period. Officials are not certain of the origin of the money, but are fairly certain the money was drug-related. Not anymore.

The cash in question, which was going to be used to fund illegal drugs and the associated criminal activities, will now be put to good use in the community rather than as a means to destroy lives.

In the long run, this may be the best application of justice we have seen in some time.
