SAN FRANCISCO CARS SEIZURE:

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is set to vote today on a proposal
to allow the immediate seizure of the cars of alleged drug buyers and johns
caught in drug and prostitution stings.

The proposal, put forth by Supervisor Amos Brown, mirrors one already on
the books in Oakland.

Because a committee on the proposal failed to meet a full quorum, the
proposal is going before the full board.

The Oakland ordinance has allowed police to seize and auction hundreds of
cars without a conviction, and has been hotly contested as unconstitutional
by civil rights groups.

Those same groups are lobbying against Supervisor Brown's proposal.

"It's generating money for the city so there's conflict-of-interest
problems," said Alan Schlosser, American Civil Liberties Union attorney.
