MEXICO'S FORMER DRUG CZAR SENTENCED FOR TRAFFICKING
An imprisoned army general who once served as Mexico's top anti-drug
official was sentenced Thursday to an additional 40 years for drug
trafficking, bringing his total sentence to more than 71 years.
An appeals court upheld an earlier prison sentence against Gen. Jes=FAs
Gutierrez Rebollo for helping a drug cartel smuggle tons of South
American cocaine to the United States, taking part in organized crime
and conspiracy to commit criminal acts.
Gutierrez Rebollo was arrested in 1997 on multiple charges, and that
same year a criminal court sentenced him to 31 years in prison for
illegal weapons possession.
