TRUDEAU'S DRUG-LAW LEGACY

Victoria -- Lorraine Weinrib's analysis of Pierre Trudeau's constitutional
legacy (A Giant Legal Footprint -- Oct. 5) unaccountably omits an important
issue, the use and misuse of drugs in a so-called Just Society.

It is impossible for me to believe that Mr. Trudeau believed in "supporting
liberty and equality by disengaging the state from the most intimate
aspects of our lives" when he declined to implement the recommendations of
the 1973 Le Dain Commission that marijuana possession no longer be
considered a criminal offence and that heroin-maintenance programs be
encouraged.

When it came to drugs, Mr. Trudeau was just another gutless politician.
