POLICE'S $1M PAYOUT TO COMMUNE

The New South Wales Police Service was today ordered to pay more than $1
million to 24 members of a commune after a bungled drug raid.

The residents from the Wytaliba commune near Glen Innes in northern NSW sued
police after police swooped on their property in September 1997 without a
search warrant.

Police searched the commune for two days.

Judge Audrey Balla in the NSW District court today awarded each of the
commune dwellers damages of between $10,300 and $214,700.

The total damages awarded were $1,043,534. - AAP
