SCHOOL SWEEP NETS DRUGS

LONG SAULT - Drugs were seized and students charged during drug sweeps at
area high schools Friday.

The Standard-Freeholder has learned searches by the Ontario Provincial
Police canine drug unit were completed at Glengarry District High School,
Ecole Secondaire Le Relais and Char-Lan District High School.

No information was available Friday as to which school was the fourth one
searched by police.

Const. Dave Budzinski, of the SD and G OPP, confirmed Friday drugs were
seized and students were charged. He could not release more details.

He said the OPP would be releasing more information Monday morning.

Jacques Lemire, GDHS principal, confirmed there were drugs found at his
school.

``Some students were charged with possession,'' said Lemire.

He also said he did not know how many students had been charged, but
confirmed two students were suspended.

Colin Geoffrion, principal of Le Relais, which shares the same facilities as
GDHS, also confirmed drugs had been found.

Geoffrion said no students from his school had been suspended, and the
school was continuing its own investigations. He also said he did not know
how many students had been charged.

Joe Gunn, trustee with the Upper Canada District School Board, said Friday
evening he had received information the search at Char-Lan District High
School found nothing.

Char-Lan and GDHS are part of the Upper Canada board. Le Relais is part of
the Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l'Est ontarien.

``I'm very pleased there were no drugs at Char-Lan,'' said Gunn, who
wouldn't comment on Glengarry because he hadn't received any information
about that situation.

``I certainly commend the canine squad for searching drugs out,'' said Gunn.
