DRUG BUST COP PRAISED

A Wanaka detective earned high praise from his police bosses on Tuesday for
his part in halting a $350,000 cannabis-growing operation in Northern
Southland.

Detective Pete Corbett was awarded a Commissioner's Commendation by
district commander Nick Perry at an awards ceremony in Cromwell.

Mr Corbett and another detective were involved in a six-month cannabis
cultivation investigation during 1997-98.

The pair made several trips by foot into high country in Northern
Southland, up to 1100m above sea level.

The investigation resulted in a conservative $350,000 of cannabis seized
and a man being sent to jail for three years.

Mr Perry presented awards for long service to nine other officers from
throughout Central Otago.

21-year clasps: Sergeant Steve Ereckson, Detective Gary Hyndman, Senior
Constable Paul Milne (Cromwell) and Senior Constable Max Law (Arrowtown).

14-year medals: Senior Constable Matt Scully, Senior Constable Ken Terry
(Cromwell), Senior Constable Terry Saunders (Wanaka), Senior Constable Dave
Cherry (Queenstown) and Detective Dave McCone (Alexandra).
