LABRADOR INNU IN GASS-SNIFF DILEMMA

SHESHATSHIU - A desperate bid by aboriginal leaders to
have children removed from their homes to keep them from sniffing gas
has infuriated some parents in Sheshatshiu, Labrador's largest Innu
community.

"They're going to upset a lot of parents," said Raphael Gregoire, 51,
a parent whose own child has been singled out for a formal assessment
by social workers.

"They're putting this community into a very bad light. There's 1,200
Innu here and a select few are making this decision to take away the
kids."

Social workers have identified 12 to 14 children who should be removed
but they said they're having a difficult time finding a detox centre
that can take them all.
