STUDY OF MARIJUANA FOR AIDS IS APPROVED
The Drug Enforcement Administration has approved a study in which a
California county will give government-grown marijuana to 60 AIDS patients
to assess its benefits.
The 12-week study in San Mateo County, south of San Francisco, could begin
as early as January, said Mike Nevin, a county supervisor. The study was
approved on Wednesday.
In 1996, Californians passed Proposition 215, which allows the possession,
cultivation and use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Putting the
measure into effect has proved difficult, however, as lawmakers struggle to
agree on prescription and distribution guidelines.
