COLOMBIAN OFFICIAL'S SON HELD ON SMUGGLING CHARGES
MIAMI--U.S. customs agents have arrested the son of a top Colombian
anti-drug official on charges of smuggling more than 15 pounds of heroin
into the United States on a flight from Colombia to Miami.
Andres Lafaurie-Restrepo, 19, and Juan Pablo Mejia, 18, were searched at
Miami airport Wednesday, and both had heroin taped to their legs, the
Customs Service said in a statement yesterday.
Restrepo is the son of Maria Ines Restrepo, director of Colombia's state-run
National Alternative Development Program (Plante), which seeks to wean
peasant farmers off illicit drug crops.
