STRONG TIES WITH ASIA-PACIFIC THE KEY TO STOPPING DRUG TRADE: SEMINAR

It is hoped strengthening ties between Australia and Asia-Pacific
enforcement agencies will help stop the illegal drug and people smuggling
trades.

The Australian Federal Police are hosting a seminar in Brisbane with 18
delegates from the region, as well as two American FBI agents.

The Minister for Justice and Customs, Amanda Vanstone, says a united front
is the only way to tackle trans-national crime.

"Cooperation is now the key weapon at getting intelligence in advance
working with other agencies across jurisdictional boundaries," she said.

"It's just vitally important because criminals don't recognise
jurisdictional boundaries and we therefore have to work together with other
agencies so we can tighten the criminal net."
