LET'S NOT FORGET THE VICTIMS
RE: 'Top criminal lawyers say province going too far' (Nov. 28). It was
interesting to see a noted criminal lawyer speak out against Ontario's
proposed legislation to allow police to seize the assets of suspected
members of organized crime.
These high-rolling offenders have the financial resources to hire the most
skilled lawyers. Most often, the results -- although legal -- do not equal
"justice," unless one's definition of justice is getting the criminal set
free on various technicalities.
Like many other citizens, I am fed up with the watching our legal system --
with the help of lawyers whose fees are out of the reach of ordinary
Canadians -- administer light "slaps on the wrist" to these bottom feeders,
while their victims remain without hope of any recovery of their losses.
I would agree that there is no need for this legislation -- provided
lawyers demonstrate a determination to obtain justice for all --
particularly the victims.
