ALL MUST HELP FIGHT CRIME

Dear Editor:

Re: Not all rosy downtown, Letters to the Editor, The Record, Aug. 23.

Interesting that correspondent Marcel Catellier states he saw not one
but three separate groups of individuals dealing drugs openly in the
downtown area.

He then proceeds to chastise the New Westminster Police Service for
seemingly doing nothing about it - it's always someone else who should
'do something.'

It seems logical to me to ask, why did Mr. Catellier not simply use a
telephone and call 911?

It has been my experience that our excellent police force would be
right there - front and centre.

It was the late Mahatma Gandhi who spoke the truism, "The change we
wish to see begins with us."

The police repeatedly ask us to report suspicious activity. We have a
responsibility to do so.

Not only that, to also have the intestinal fortitude to appear as a
witness for the law, if there is a trial.

Only through such actions can we hope to curb the drug menace on our
streets. The police cannot do it alone.
