'DO-IT-YOURSELF' STANDARD

Editor: Is growing marijuana a crime or not? Is not marijuana the
usual precursor to hard drugs?

Randy Cohen (Everyday Ethics, Dec. 2) seems to think that ethics in
this matter have a "do-it-yourself" standard, which has no relation to
laws of our country or the degradation of drugs. He picks it as a
crime which we have no legal obligation to report, then adds that
there is no moral obligation to enlist in the drug war.

No wonder President Fox of Mexico has to remind us that we have just
as much responsibility in the drug trade (by our purchases) as they
do. With wimpy citizens like Randy "Don't Get Involved" Cohen, we can
let everybody go to pot without a pang of conscience.
