GERMAN ECSTASY ALERT WORRIES CITY POLICE

RCMP are warning a deadly batch of ecstasy tablets might make its way to
Winnipeg.

Officials in Germany recently issued a worldwide alert to law-enforcement
agencies warning they have encountered ecstasy tablets containing a lethal
combination of chemicals.

According to Const. Annette Levis of the Winnipeg RCMP drug section, the
warning was issued after a 30-year-old German man died after consuming
ecstasy tablets.

Analysis of the pills the man took found they contained
paramethoxyamphetamine (PMA) as well as ecstasy. Taken together, the two
drugs can be fatal.

City police are concerned as most of the ecstasy that makes its way to
Winnipeg originates in Europe.

"We haven't seen this stuff on Winnipeg scene yet," Levis said. "But it's
highly possible we will and we don't want to see deaths over the holidays."

The tablets in question sport a Mitsubishi logo or an elephant design,
Levis said.
