NO MURDER CHARGE FOR BARROW MAN

A Barrow County man won't be tried on murder charges in the death of his
son, who died after snorting drugs with his father. County Magistrate Gale
Goodman on Friday reduced the charges to involuntary manslaughter and
distribution of methamphetamine. Michael R. Smock, 47, of Auburn originally
had been charged with murder in the Dec. 15 death of 17-year-old Joseph
Smock. The boy died after snorting crystal methamphetamine off the family's
dining room table. Defense attorney Katie Anderson successfully argued that
the father never intended for the teen to die.
