$4 MILLION DRUG BUST - NEWARK MEN HELD
Federal drug agents arrested two Newark men and seized $4 million worth of
heroin in what the Drug Enforcement Administration called one of the Bay
Area's biggest drug busts.
The agency announced yesterday that federal agents and local police
officers arrested Javier Mora, 37, and Manuel Velazquez, 66, on Thursday.
Investigators also seized 180 pounds of suspected black tar heroin packed
in an oily substance to fool drug-sniffing dogs, according to an affidavit
filed in U.S. District Court in Oakland.
Mora and Velazquez remained behind bars last night on suspicion of drug
trafficking. Federal prosecutors are expected to file drug charges that
could bring mandatory life sentences upon conviction.
