OUR YOUTH DESERVE BETTER

Editor, The News:

Re: Meth Task Force Treatment Unfortunate (The News, Oct. 28).

I would like to see some facts to back up Stepan Vdovine's comment
about us being on the "verge of a pandemic" when it comes to the use
of crystal meth in our schools.

According to the Minister of Education, there may be five per cent of
students using the drug. Recognizing that all stats and surveys are
never 100 per cent accurate, the fact remains that crystal meth is
not the No. 1 drug of choice for the majority of our students.

It is very easy for elected representatives to jump on a bandwagon
that provides them with air time to promote their own agendas,
whatever they might be. I expect much more from my representatives.

I have personally witnessed the devastating effects crystal meth has
had on one of my siblings and for my family these effects have been
much harsher and damaging than that of pot, alcohol or other
recreational drugs. I can also tell you that her substance abuse did
not start with crystal meth.

I am not an expert in drug use or addictions, but I do know that a
silo approach to any problem is less likely to generate the desired
long-term results when compared to a complete and holistic approach.

Gateway drugs like alcohol and marijuana may not make sexy headlines
when compared to crystal meth, but they need to be the priority. Our
youth need to participate in a balanced program, that when complete
will enable them to make sound decisions and choices when faced with
all recreation drugs.

While preparing this letter I learned that the school board currently
supports and promotes a substance abuse program that was developed in
partnership with the original crystal meth task force and I encourage
our trustees and educators to continue with a balanced educational process.

Mr. Vdovine's comment about so much for prevention, which I assume is
targeted at the other school board members and their desire to
promote a balanced program, is nothing but political grandstanding
and our youth deserve better.
