SETTLEMENT REACHED IN SUIT OVER SEARCH BY DRUG UNIT

A family whose home was wrongly searched by drug unit officers has reached
a settlement with the city of Neenah and Outagamie County, their attorney says.

The exact amount being paid to Daniel and Cynthia Cuervos was not disclosed
by either side as a condidtion of the settlement. But John Peterson, the
couple's attorney, said the settlement was less than $1 million.

The Cuervos, their three children and a visiting neighbor girl were
sleeping Dec. 5, 1998, when officers of the Lake Winnebago
Multi-Juristictional Group Drug Unit (MEG unit) entered their apartment and
held them at gunpoint while searching the home for drugs. The search
warrant used had actually been granted for two neighboring apartments.

"There was a settlement that I thought appropriate given what happened to
the Cuervos, and it's a settlement which will hopefully make the MEG
officers think twice before this happens again," Peterson said. "Hopefully
it will make them feel responsible."
