LEGAL POT HEADED FOR CLINICAL TRIALS
San Francisco International Airport received a legal shipment of
marijuana last week. It was headed for an unprecedented study on the
drug's medicinal effectiveness to be conducted at San Mateo County
General Hospital.
"Now, the clinical trials really do begin," said San Mateo County
Supervisor Michael Nevin, who has been fighting for three years to make
the study a reality.
With the shipment of marijuana cigarettes, made with pot grown at the
University of Mississippi, the nation's first government study on
medicinal marijuana will begin.
Sixty subjects will take part in the $500,000 project, expected to run
about 1 1/2 years. The study will monitor how the drug affects appetite,
nausea, pain and lucidity.
