MAN OPENED FIRE, WAS SHOT DURING RAID, STATE POLICE SAY

Spencer County Deputy Is Injured Diving For Cover

TAYLORSVILLE, Ky. -- A Spencer County sheriff's deputy was injured and a
Spencer County man was shot three times yesterday during a marijuana raid
in a remote area of Spencer County near Taylorsville Lake.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Rick Devers said that Mike Cull was shot
three times after he came out of his back door, pointed a deer rifle at a
deputy and fired.

The two deputies who had gone to the door dived for cover as Cull fired.
Neither was hit, but Deputy Russell Cranmer injured some ribs, apparently
while tumbling over a fence.

Officials did not know how many shots were fired. Cull was hit once in each
leg and once in an arm, Devers said.

Cull was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, where he was being
treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Cranmer was
treated at a local medical facility and released.

The deputies responded about 4:30 p.m. to a sighting of marijuana by a
special task force helicopter. The amount of marijuana involved was not
released last night. The area is northeast of Taylorsville Lake's Possum
Ridge Campground.
