POLICE CHIEF SURPRISES DRUG BUYERS ON PHONE
LUDLOW, Ky. (AP) -- Callers who may have been looking to buy drugs were
surprised when the chief of police answered the telephone.
Chief Tom Collins surprised them further when he addressed them by name,
using the phone's caller ID.
"Oh, hi Chief Collins, what are you doing there?" some asked.
Collins and other officers were confiscating 2{def} pounds of marijuana and
10 guns at the residence, which had been identified as a retail drug
establishment. They were following a tip from police in Greendale, Ind.
Earlier Thursday, Michael Teeters, 41, of Ludlow, was pulled over for a
traffic violation in Greendale. After the traffic officer smelled marijuana
and saw drug paraphernalia on the front seat of the vehicle, Teeters was
arrested.
A search of the car uncovered a small amount of marijuana. During a strip
search at the Dearborn County, Ind., jail, 1{def} grams of cocaine was
found in a pouch hidden inside Teeters' mouth, said Greendale Patrolman
Kendle Davis.
Teeters told police he sold three to four pounds of marijuana a month from
his Ludlow home, Davis said. Teeters was charged with possession of
marijuana, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia and
was released after posting $1,500 for bail.
Teeters then drove to his home just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati,
where Kentucky officials were waiting to arrest him again.
"Whatever the trouble this guy is in over there in Greendale, he is in more
trouble here," Collins said. "I don't know why he came back here."
In Kentucky, Teeters was charged with trafficking of a controlled substance
within 1,000 yards of a school, a felony that carries a penalty of one to
five years in jail.
