STUDENT SEARCHES ON BOARD AGENDA
Panel To Discuss Discusses Proposed Changes To Policies.
NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- Student locker searches and the use of drug-sniffing
dogs on campus will be among the issues addressed by the Board of Education
this afternoon.
The two issues are among the proposed modifications to board and
administrative policies on school searches, use of electronic information
and civil and legal rights.
"Mainly, its an attempt to be more clarified in each of the categories,"
said Bill Card, director of student support services. The proposed policies
establish procedures for searching a student, or his or her property or
car. Under the proposed policy, students or their property may be searched
when "there is reasonable suspicion that the search will uncover evidence
that the student is violating the law or rules of the district."
The policy would also state that lockers are district property and that
officials may search a locker "at any time."
Trained dogs would only be used to sniff lockers, classrooms, desks and
bags, according to the policy.
Also included is the right of the district to review any material on school
computers and to monitor computer activities to determine if the use is
appropriate.
The policies are up for discussion only and no action will be taken by the
board.
Other items on the agenda:
* The school board and district officials will continue discussing a task
force report on facility use and student housing.
* A public hearing will be held on the Preliminary Environmental Assessment
for the Edison-Pacific Project. A company that tested the site concluded
that it meets all requirements and that no additional investigation is needed.
* An update will be given on Measure K projects.
The meeting will begin at 3 p.m. in the Administration Center's board room
at 223 N. Jackson St. There will be no break.
