MOVING MEMORIES

Adam Engbrecht was asleep in his bed that muggy Friday night in June. His
two older sisters, Andrea and Jennifer, and parents, Mike and Sharon, were
sound asleep in their rooms down the hall.

Two blocks away, Adam's friend, Tyshaun Cauldwell, lay dead on the ground.

"I might of heard the shot. It sounded like it was in the distance but I
hear gunshots all the time," Sharon said. "I hear gunshots all night long."
Mike heard about Tyshaun's death on the radio the next morning. Sharon read
about the shooting in the Democrat and Chronicle and broke the news to her
9-year-old son.

"I was upstairs watching TV and Mom told me to come downstairs," Adam
murmured, his head hanging down. "She said, 'Do you know the boy who got
shot?' I said 'Yeah.' 'Was he a friend of yours?' And I said, 'Yeah.' "

Adam couldn't sleep the rest of the weekend. He crawled into bed with his
parents in the middle of the night because of nightmares.

To remember his friend, Adam has filled a wooden box with newspaper
clippings about him and a Valentine's Day card that says: Valentine, You're
a Perfect 10! From: Tyshaun. To: Adam.

Tyshaun's death is a tragic example of why the Engbrechts wanted to move.
There had been four shootings in the neighborhood in the two years the
Engbrechts lived there, Mike said.

"Oh yeah. I hear that a lot too," said Mike, sitting on his front porch on
a July evening, pointing to a blue car rolling past with music blaring.

The Engbrechts were on the waiting list for the Phillips Village apartment
complex in Webster for nine months. Two days before Tyshaun died, the
Engbrechts got a call that an apartment was available.

On Aug. 1 -- a hot and sticky day much like the day Tyshaun died -- the
Engbrechts packed up a moving truck and their relatives' four minivans and
left the neighborhood.

Awaiting Adam in his new bedroom was one of the first things the family had
moved -- Adam's box of memories of Tyshaun.
