MILITARY SEIZES 17,177 POUNDS OF COKE AT SEA
ORLANDO - Like anglers showing off a trophy fish, Coast Guard and Navy
crews had a big catch to boast of Wednesday - more than 8 1/2 tons of
cocaine seized from a Colombian fishing trawler in the Pacific Ocean.
The Coast Guard said a tip by the Colombian navy led to the bust Aug. 2.
The cocaine weighed in at 17,177 pounds after being unloaded from a Navy
frigate at the Mayport Naval Station near Jacksonville.
Ten Colombians on the trawler were also brought to Jacksonville. A Tampa
federal indictment naming them on drug charges was unsealed Wednesday, and
they are being transported to Tampa.
