GOLDEN STATE'S PORTER ARRESTED

DOTHAN, Ala. -- Former Auburn star Chris Porter was arrested Friday on drug
charges after he was stopped for a traffic violation.

Police said the Golden State Warriors forward had a small plastic bags with
cocaine and another with marijuana in the car.

He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and
second-degree possession of marijuana, said Lt. Ray Wiehe of the Dothan
Police Department.

Porter was released under $1,000 bond.

Police Capt. Steve Parrish said Porter was stopped after an officer saw him
speeding. Parrish said the officer found the cocaine on Porter and found
the marijuana and a handgun in the car.

Parrish said police were checking to see whether Porter is allowed to carry
a gun in Alabama.

Porter, the 1999 SEC player of the year, was drafted in the second round by
the Warriors last year. The 6-foot-7 forward started 35 games for Golden
State last season, averaging 8.6 points and 3.7 rebounds.

His hometown is about 25 miles from Dothan.

Porter was suspended during his senior year at Auburn for accepting $2,500
from a sports agent. He told school officials he needed the money to help
his mother, who was on the verge of being evicted from her home.

Porter was never charged in the case, but three others were.
