POLICE INVESTIGATE FIVE POSSIBLE HEROIN DEATHS

Pittsburgh police and the Allegheny County medical examiner's office
yesterday were investigating three possible heroin deaths and six
non-fatal overdoses.

Officials in Westmoreland County also are investigating the deaths of
a couple found in their apartment from a suspected overdose.

Toxicology tests haven't been completed on any of the victims, and
police said they don't know yet if any of the cases are connected or
related to a particular batch of bad heroin.

In the city, Leslie Williams, 48, was found at 8:36 p.m. at a
residence on La Place Street in the Hill District. Investigators
found a syringe near his body.

About two hours later, the body of a 58-year-old man, identified as
Stephen Nagy, was found in a room at the Wood Street Commons,
Downtown. Investigators found drug paraphernalia in the apartment.

Autopsies were scheduled for both men.

A third man, 39, was found dead at 2:48 a.m. yesterday on Breker
Street on the North Side, although police weren't sure if his death
was connected to drugs. His name was not released pending
notification of his family.

Six non-fatal suspected overdoses also occurred in the Hill District.

In Vandergrift, police found a married couple dead inside an
apartment on Hancock Boulevard on Thursday evening. They were
identified as Amy Louise and Paul John Glasser, both 46. Police found
stamp bags, cocaine and heroin in the apartment.

Authorities said they don't know if the overdoses are related in any
way to the deadly fentanyl-laced heroin that swept the nation over
the summer and was suspected in the deaths of hundreds of people in
Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia and elsewhere.
