'RED RIBBON' EVENTS DISCOURAGE DRUG USE
Schools Use Theme Days As Reminders For Pupils
RALEIGH - Wake County schools celebrated "Red Ribbon Week" this week as a
way to recognize drug-free living and to discourage illegal drug, alcohol
and tobacco use.
Red Ribbon Week began in 1988 in remembrance of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a
37-year-old U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent killed in 1985
during an undercover investigation of an illegal drug operation in Mexico.
Here's how some North Raleigh schools celebrated the week:
On Monday, North Ridge Elementary School held "Pledge Day." Each student
who pledged to live a drug-free life received a "Red Ribbon" sticker.
Tuesday was "Shade Out Drugs Day" at Wildwood Forest Elementary School.
Students and staff wore sunglasses to school.
Wednesday was "Better Things Day" at York Elementary School. Students have
better things to do than drugs, so they dressed in the attire of the
careers they hope to have one day.
Thursday was "Drugs and I Don't Mix Day" at Brassfield Road Elementary
School. Students were asked to wear mismatched clothes.
Today, students at Hilburn Drive Elementary "Put a Cap on Drugs." Everyone
was asked to wear hats to symbolize the day.
