AADAC WARNS TEENS MAY ABUSE EPHEDRINE

A common over-the-counter supplement sold throughout Calgary is rapidly
becoming the recreational drug of choice among Alberta teenagers looking
for the next high.

Ephedrine, a supplement used by people who want to lose weight or cure
nasal congestion, is becoming more prevalent across the province, says the
Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission.

And it appears teenagers are the most regular abusers of the supplement
which, when used in high doses, makes the heart beat faster, increases
blood pressure and causes hyperactivity.

Large doses of ephedrine can also lead to dizziness, seizures and strokes.

The commission says teens are taking more pills than recommended to get high.
