NEWTON ARRESTED AGAIN ON DRUG CHARGES

For the second time in 6 weeks, former Dallas Cowboys guard Nate Newton has
been sacked by a drug arrest.

Newton was arrested with two men Wednesday in Ellis County, Texas, and
charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, a federal charge.

Police said Newton, 39, who retired from football in 1999, had at least 175
pounds of marijuana in his car. He's already facing a felony charge
stemming from a Nov. 4 arrest in Louisiana, where police said they found
213 pounds of marijuana in a van he was driving.

Wednesday, Newton -- released on a $100,000 bond from his previous arrest
- -- was picked up after federal Drug Enforcement Agency agents flagged down
Dallas County Sheriff's Department deputies and requested help in stopping
two vehicles.

''By time the deputies determined they were actually federal agents, they
caught up to the vehicles and stopped them just inside Ellis County, as
they left Dallas County,'' Sheriff Department spokesman Don Peritz said.

Newton, being held at Lew Sterrett Justice Center, is to be arraigned
today. The arrests represent a troubling descent for a player who helped
the Cowboys win three Super Bowls and earned six Pro Bowl selections in a
13-year NFL career that he began as an undrafted free agent.

Popular, jovial and outspoken as a player, Newton worked as a studio
commentator for ESPN radio's NFL coverage last year. Earlier this year, he
worked as an analyst for some BET college football telecasts.
