FUNERAL SERVICE TO BE HELD TODAY FOR SLAIN OFFICER
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Salters-Moore Funeral Home
in Prentiss for slain Officer Ron Jones. Jones, 29, a canine officer for
the Prentiss Police Department and the son of Prentiss Chief Ronald Jones,
was shot around 11 p.m. Wednesday while serving a search warrant at a
rental duplex home on Mary Street in Prentiss.
Burial for Jones will be held at Dublin Cemetery on Mississippi 42 East of
Prentiss.
"We're a small town, and there's a tremendous amount of anger," said Mayor
Charley Dumas. "We don't have anything special planned right now, but we
will probably put up some kind of memorial or something."
Monticello resident Corey Maye, 21, who was renting the duplex that Jones
entered, is being held without bond in the Forrest County Regional Jail and
is accused of shooting Jones.
Maye was inside the residence with his 1-year-old daughter and allegedly
shot at Jones as he attempted to enter his bedroom. Neither Maye nor his
daughter were injured.
At his first court appearance Thursday afternoon in Prentiss, Maye was
charged with capital murder and told the judge he had rented the duplex for
about two months.
Jones had been an officer for four years and went on the raid with eight
other officers that were also from the Pearl River Basin Narcotics Task
Force and the Jefferson Davis County Sheriff's Department.
Dumas, who is speaking for the city and the police department, said that he
hasn't heard any new information pertaining to the case, but that a local
pastor offered counseling services to the officers involved in the raid and
those serving on Prentiss' police force.
No special memorial funds have been established by the family in lieu of
flowers and the family has made no special requests concerning the memorial
service, said Jefferson Davis County Coroner Greg Blackwell.
Jones is survived by his parents, a twin brother and another brother.
