SMOKING OUT CRIMINALS

The co-operation and co-ordination demonstrated by the Niagara Regional
Police Service in its recent raids on five local marijuana-growing
operations is something worth celebrating. A combination of 470 police
officers across the province, working on a project initiated by York
Regional Police, searched 100 sites and netted more than $3.5 million in
equipment, plants and cash.

For years, some police services were very territorial over what information
they would share and who they wanted investigating in their jurisdictions.
But these results demonstrate an open attitude, with different police
services joining forces to achieve spectacular results. This is the sort of
hand-in-glove investigative work we'll need a lot more of in the fight
against organized crime.
