SHUTTING DOWN METH LABS

The recent shutdown of two meth labs, one near McConnells and one near Fort
Mill, was encouraging, but we hope this is not an indication that
production of this dangerous drug will become more prevalent in the region.
The most recent raid was conducted by officers from Lancaster County, York
County, the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The officers acted
on information gathered by the York County Multijurisdictional Drug
Enforcement Unit.

Clearly, agents take the manufacture of methamphetamines seriously. In some
parts of the country, makeshift meth labs have become an epidemic.

Meth, also known as speed, ice or crystal, is a stimulant that can be
snorted, smoked or injected. Its effect is similar to that of cocaine but
much longer lasting. It is highly addictive and dangerous, often causing
psychotic and violent episodes in those who abuse it.

Meth can be made with easily available ingredients, many of which can be
bought in a pharmacy or grocery store. But "cooking" the ingredients is
hazardous. The chemicals are volatile and easily flammable. Many makeshift
meth labs have burned down, often with the occupants inside.

This is a particularly nasty drug. We are pleased that local officers
appear to be on top of the situation and are working to ensure that these
labs do not proliferate here.

Keep up the good work.
