RULING IN BOOKSTORE CASE TO SET PRECEDENT

In a case closely watched by police and civil libertarians, Colorado's
highest court will announce today if a Denver bookstore must reveal whether
a customer bought "how-to" books on making illegal drugs.

The Tattered Cover's owner, Joyce Meskis, refused to allow police to search
her records to link a customer with a suspected illegal drug laboratory.

The Colorado Supreme Court will be the highest court in the United States
to rule on how far law enforcement can go in searching bookstore records
for evidence in criminal investigations, said Daniel Recht, Meskis' attorney.
