HOOVER POLICE SEIZE $87,000 FROM MOTORISTS

Hoover police confiscated $87,000 from two Texas women who were stopped on
Interstate 459 this week for driving too slow.

The women could not explain why they had so much money on them, so it was
seized according to federal law, police Lt. David Carlington said.

They were in a 2002 Dodge Intrepid with a Georgia license plate, headed
south on I-459 when they were pulled over about a mile north of Morgan Road
about 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Hoover police report. The women were
not arrested, Carlington said.

Police have the right to confiscate money when they come across a large sum
of cash that is unexplainable because it may be linked to criminal
activity, Carlington said.

Hoover will notify the FBI about the seizure, and the FBI will contact the
women and give them a chance to prove the money is theirs, he said. If they
cannot, the federal government keeps 20 percent of the money, and Hoover
will keep 80 percent, he said.
