MOTHER GUILTY OF SNEAKING DRUGS INTO PRISON

RED DEER, Alta. (CP) -- An Edmonton mother caught smuggling drugs in
her panties into prison for her son will be sentenced in November.

Judith Flamman was strip-searched and arrested on April 1, 2001, while
visiting her son, Dan Hingall, at the Bowden Institution.

She was convicted of possession of a narcotic for the purpose of
trafficking by Red Deer provincial court Judge Thomas Schollie.

"I would expect she would know that you don't take drugs into a
penitentiary," Schollie said.

Larry Richmond, the chief security officer at the institution,
testified that he received an anonymous tip that a woman named Jude
was planning to smuggle dope into the prison in her vagina for an inmate.

During the strip search, a yellow balloon wrapped in cellophane was
discovered in Flamman's underwear. The balloon contained more than 16
grams of marijuana.

On Tuesday, Flamman said she usually transported marijuana intended
for personal use around her waist, rather than in a purse or jacket.
