BEATING OF AGED COUPLE SHOCKS CRIMINALS
Illegal Drug Community Volunteers Information On Possible Attacker
The brutal beating of an elderly Burnaby couple in a home invasion was so
abhorrent members of the illegal drug community are volunteering
information about the possible attacker.
"Even in the criminal society this type of crime is frowned upon," Burnaby
RCMP Constable Phil Reid said Wednesday. "Just to get some people from that
element phoning is good."
Yugi Kado, 98, and his 94-year-old wife, whose name has not been released,
were attacked in their home in the 8600-block of 10th Avenue between 6 p.m.
and 10 p.m. Saturday. They were found by one of their daughters the next
morning.
Yugi Kado remained in the hospital Wednesday with bleeding on the brain, a
broken orbital bone, a jaw broken in two places and the right side of his
face severely bruised, family members said at the home.
His wife has a black eye and bruises on her face and leg. Relatives said
she has to be helped to walk.
Both of them were punched in the face by a Caucasian man whom police have
characterized as a "cowardly creep."
Most of those six or seven calls received by police were from people
involved with illegal drugs, said Reid, who added that the crime fits the
profile of a drug addict.
"Obviously, we think it's because they had to get their next fix," Reid said.
Other than giving a vague description, police and family members said the
couple were too traumatized to speak about the ordeal.
Although police said only a wallet and purse were taken from the home,
relatives said the inside of the home was a shambles.
Kim Addison, floor manager at a nearby Pharmasave, said Yugi Kado was
frequently seen about the area.
"He walked around here all the time," Addison said. "He is such a sweetheart."
