FEDERAL PRISONS
There are 102 federal prisons scattered throughout the United States, with
one located in Talladega and one in Montgomery. The total inmate population
as of May was 160,193.
Of those:
19.6 percent were in minimum security prisons.
The greatest number of prisoners -- 34.3 percent -- were in low-security
prisons.
93 percent of the inmates were male.
56 percent of the prisoners were white, and 40.8 percent were black.
The average inmate age was 37.
55.1 percent of them were in prison for drug offenses.
