DRUG PROGRAM MUST GUARD RIGHTS
As for implementation of a new program by the Rapides Parish School Board
to allow people to post anonymous tips about drugs or crimes, we have this
advice: Be careful.
While anonymity may encourage someone to come forward with information
which can lead to action positive for the public interest, it can also
cloak acts of false accusation and revenge.
Protecting the rights of those accused is imperative.
The other part of the new program, the random testing of students for drugs
by a private company, should work if, as Superintendent Patsy Jenkins puts
it, is used properly.
The program is certain to be challenged at some point, so it is imperative
that this new program is on solid legal grounds.
