HEROIN SEIZED, TRIO CHARGED

Customs officers had their own quick fix for the drug-addicted yesterday --
they seized 16 kilograms of heroin with a street value of $8 million.

"This is the equivalent of 100,000 doses," said Canada Customs official
Linell Redmond, who called it the second-largest heroin bust ever at
Vancouver International Airport.

Redmond credited new legislation that helped identify "high-risk
passengers" and good work by customs officials. The flight originated in
Cambodia, she said.

Those arrested on charges of possessing a controlled substance for the
purpose of trafficking are: Kunitoyo Tsutsui, 49, Takehiro Shiraishi, 58,
and Kiyoshi Kurobe, 61, all of Japan.

After an appearance in Richmond Provincial Court, the three were remanded
in custody.
