Melton Is Not Helping His Cause

New Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics chief
Frank Melton's high visibility road block drug searches near the state
Capitol, in addition to possibly being illegal, aren't helping his cause any
in establishing his credentials.

Since the former TV executive was appointed director by Gov. Ronnie Musgrove
last month, he has used SWAT-tactics to make a big show of fighting drugs.

His roadblocks near the Capitol Tuesday apparently were to dramatize to
state lawmakers that he's serious about drug crime. If so, he would do well
to focus on actually arresting criminals, particularly big-time drug
criminals, not harassing motorists trying to get to work.

His excuse - homeland security - is worse than a joke.

No one can dispute Melton's commitment and dedication to his task. But these
tactics seem more show than substance.

Drug enforcement is hard work - sometimes boring, sometime dangerous, all
the time serious.

It is not a flashy TV cop show.
