BUSH NAMES FIRST FEMALE DEA HEAD

President Bush has nominated Karen P. Tandy, currently head of the Justice
Department's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, as the new chief
of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Washington Times reported March
22.

If the U.S. Senate confirms Tandy's nomination, she would become the first
woman in history to head the anti-drug agency.

Tandy would replace acting administrator John B. Brown III, who took over
the position after Asa Hutchinson left the agency to become undersecretary
for border and transportation security at the new Department of Homeland
Security.

Prior to her current position of deputy associate attorney general, Tandy
served as chief of litigation in the Justice Department's asset-forfeiture
office and deputy chief for narcotics and dangerous drugs.

As head of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, Tandy oversees a
federal drug-enforcement program aimed at disrupting and dismantling major
drug-trafficking organizations.
