POT ACTIVISTS GATHER IN RED DEER
More than 250 people turned out Sunday in Red Deer to protest Canada's
marijuana laws and push for decriminalization of the drug.
The gathering took place in the park next to City Hall in the central
Alberta city's downtown area.
Police watched the protest, but said it remained peaceful.
Marijuana is considered a controlled substance under Canadian law, and
possession and cultivation of the drug are illegal. Advocates want the
government to decriminalize possession of small amounts for personal use.
Red Deer was the scene of a $500,000 pot bust last Wednesday, with the RCMP
seizing 475 plants from an illegal grow operation in a home in the north end.
Two men have been charged with cultivation of marijuana and possession for
the purpose of trafficking.
