DELTASSIST EDUCATES STUDENTS ABOUT DANGERS OF METH
As part of National Addictions Awareness Week (Nov. 19-25),
Deltassist is going into the classroom to speak to Grade 8 students
about substance abuse -- specifically crystal meth.
This year, the national awareness campaign is targeting the perils of
meth, for users and the community at large.
"We talked about various kinds of drugs and survival tips," explained
Klaus Iden, an addictions counsellor.
Iden said it's important to reach Grade 8 students because it's
typically when "kids first start to experiment."
Deltassist also this week announced details about a poster contest
open to all secondary students that focuses on "Crystal Meth: The Deadly Drug."
First prize is $500 and the student's artwork will be used in a
poster campaign about the deadly drug. (Deadline for entries is Jan.
26., see www.deltassist.com.)
Deltassist is also leading the 5th annual "Remember Me" campaign over
the holidays. Delta Liquor stores will be providing paper bags to
Delta elementary schools for students to create unique artwork
promoting responsible drinking. The bags are then returned to the
stores and used to bag up booze during the holidays.
On Thursday (Nov. 23), Deltassist will be in Scottsdale Mall
promoting awareness of alcohol and drug use issues. The Delta Youth
Substance Use Committee is also focused on the dangers associated
with meth. The committee is joining forces with the Kwantlen
University College National Institute for Community Development
Research, to survey secondary school students in Delta about meth use
and other substance abuse issues in high schools. It's the first
Delta-wide substance use survey conducted in schools in the last two
decades. Survey results will be presented during a public meeting in
February 2007.
