THESE GUYS WERE REAL LOST SOULS
The other day three young men showed up at the gates of MacDill Air Force
Base thinking it was a toll booth for the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. They
were directionless in more ways than one. Police said they had about $3,800
worth of crack cocaine, a scale, drug paraphernalia and more than $1,000 in
cash. The three were arrested and charged with felony trafficking in
cocaine.
That is one way to take drugs, and those who peddle it, off the streets.
Still, there are some drug war pacifists who think treatment is the answer.
The pro-treatment crowd needs to answer this: What else, besides
incarceration, can you do with individuals intent on distributing drugs and
ruining lives and entire communities? Some will say we need to offer them
gainful employment. But would they take it?
We can only hope that if these young men are convicted, the time they spend
in prison will teach them some things - the most important being that
selling drugs is wrong and can get you in big trouble. If not that, they
should at least learn how to read maps.
